American artist, connoisseur, and art dealer, born Mar. 17, 1822 in New York City; died there on Aug. 11, 1904. Avery began his career as an engraver on copper and wood, then established himself as an art dealer in 1865, making annual purchasing trips to Europe each year between 1871 and 1882. Painter Emanuel Leutze was born in Germany and emigrated to America in his youth. He became well-known regionally for his painting, especially portraits, and returned to Germany to paint and study from 1841 through 1859.
